How to Build Your Own Network Storage Device
Network storage may seem like something complicated, but it really isn't. Having the ability to store files, especially large multimedia files off of your main hard drive, can be very beneficial. Network storage makes backing up simple and quick. A simple, easy way to make your own network storage device can be done cost effectively and in a short period of time.

1
Acquire the basic computer parts. For a network storage device you will need the basic computer components, but because you won't need it for anything other than storage you can get less expensive parts that are stable but don't have many bells and whistles. You'll need: a motherboard (get one that includes video, sound and a network card built in), RAM, CPU, case, power supply and a CD-ROM drive. Buy as many and as large a hard drive as you can.

2
Assemble all of the pieces of the computer. You will need several hours for this so that you do not rush or break anything. (see Resources below if you do not have experience building computers.)

3
Install an operating system of your choice. You can use Windows or Linux, and either will work fine.
-
4
Format the hard drive or drives. You will get more space out of large hard drives by making them into two or three partitions instead of one. A Windows CD will let you format and split the drive into several smaller drives. This will allow for network storage that is separated more clearly.

5
Go to "Properties" and make your computer available to the network. In Windows, right click on the hard drive(s) and select "Properties" and then "Sharing." Select "Make This Folder Available." Your computer will now have its hard drives available for network storage.
