During the summertime, creating a wardrobe shouldn't be a costly or time-consuming activity. You can tailor garments from your fall collection---cheaply, quickly and easily---into fashionable summer clothes. For example, turning some oversized old jogging pants into a cute and chic skirt takes only one essential tool: a scissor. A typical pair of jogging pants or sweatpants have an extended inseam for comfortable wearing, so cutting out the crotch on a pair of Big Brother's or Dad's jogging suit will still be suitable for a little sis or daughter to wear.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Turn the jogging pants inside out. Working with the pants inside out exposes the seam stitch better, allowing the garment to be easily cut.

  2. Step 2

Draw a line for the desired length of the skirt. This mark should be right above the crotch of the unaltered garment, and stretch straight across to ensure evenness.

  3. Step 3

Pin the pockets in place by folding them completely upward and securing them with a straight pin. This step preserves the original pockets with the garment.

  4. Step 4

Cut along the preadministered line, from one end of the garment to the other. Discard any cut-off material.

  5. Step 5

Check for evenness across the hem line, and trim unwanted strings. Release the temporary placement of pockets to be sure that the length of the pockets does not exceed the length of the skirt. If so, alter the skirt by folding the pockets upward to the desired length, and add two or three stitches.

Tips & Warnings
  • Iron-on decals and buttons, which can be found a local craft store, add extra flair and design. If the skirt is too short, layering on top of a longer skirt or wearing leggings underneath may feel and look more appropriate. If the skirt is too big in the waist line, then use a fashionable accessory, like a belt, to spice up and hold up the skirt.
  • This article is specifically for altering 100 percent cotton jogging pants. If the jogging pants are made of a fabric other than cotton, the process could be considerably more difficult.
