How to Use Banjo Minnow

A banjo minnow is a highly specialized artificial lure that needs to be precisely used to be effective. It is a great lure to attract game fish such as bass and pike. It imitates the movements that an injured fish makes, and it looks like it is swimming, making it desirable to fish.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow the banjo minnow to gently settle to the bottom of the body of water after casting it out. Once you feel the line stop moving and feel assured the lure is at rest, prepare to start the retrieving action.

    • 2

Keep the tip of your fishing pole up when beginning to bring back a banjo minnow. Use just your hands and not your arms to move the rod tip. Rapidly move the rod tip toward you so that it makes the banjo minnow move only 2 to 3 feet from its original resting point in the water.

    • 3

Create some slack in your line by letting the rod tip return to where it first was before you jerked the banjo minnow toward you. Stop for a few seconds and then reel in some line. Repeat the process, causing the minnow to move just 2 to 3 feet each time. This makes it look like the banjo minnow is swimming.

    • 4

Observe your fishing line for anything that might make you think a fish has grabbed the minnow. Watch for any sideways movement of the line and be ready to set the hook if you feel a fish tugging on the banjo minnow. If no fish bites, bring the lure back to you with the aforementioned stop-and-go motion.

    • 5

Speed up your banjo minnow if the fish aren't biting it when it is coming in slower. To make it look like the minnow is swimming toward you, jerk it fast, let the line go slack for just a second, then jerk it again. Keep this up, allowing the line to slacken for a much shorter interval than before. Be prepared because fish will attack the banjo minnow more aggressively when using this technique.
