If your home doesn't have a door that leads to the backyard, you may want to consider adding a set of French doors. French doors are multiple doors that open outward and contain many windows to let in sunlight. They are simple to install, and they allow you to access a backyard or other outside area easily. A simple way to install French doors without worrying about hitting a stud is to take out a set of windows to make room for the installation.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Utility knife
  • Pry bar
  • Hammer
  • Cordless drill
  • Hacksaw
  • Flashing paper
  • Rubberized flashing
  • Caulk
  • Screws

    Removing the Window

  1. Step 1

Score the edges of the interior side of the window with a utility knife. This should cut away the paint and caulk as well.

  2. Step 2

Use a pry bar to remove the window sill.

  3. Step 3

Score the edges of the exterior side of the window with the utility knife.

  4. Step 4

Use a pry bar to remove the exterior window trim. A hammer may be necessary to pry off parts of the trim.

  5. Step 5

Remove the screws that attach the window to the wall studs.

  6. Step 6

    Remove the window, gently.

  7. Installing doors

  8. Step 1

Score the area around the old windows that will need to be removed to make room for the doors. Use a hacksaw to cut away the material.

  9. Step 2

Staple flashing paper to the bottom and sides of the opening in the wall (this will weatherproof the opening). Then add a layer of rubberized flashing on top of the flashing paper.

  10. Step 3

Caulk the edges of the opening and set the door frame (with the doors attached) into the caulk.

  11. Step 4

Secure the doors in place with screws that fit through the door jamb into the wall studs.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may wish to add a deck or walkway outside of the French doors.
  • Do not cut the opening too large. If you cut it too small, you can always enlarge it, but the opposite is much more difficult.
