How to Make a Toupee

Toupees are hairpieces that men wear to cover partial or full baldness. They are usually custom made and expensive. You may be embarrassed to walk into a salon or hair replacement store to inquire about one. Save yourself embarrassment and money by making your own toupee. Making a toupee is not as difficult as you think.

• Styrofoam head
• Human hair
• Scissors
• Bonding glue
• Blow dryer
• Small paint brush

How to Make a Toupee

1. Buy a package of raw human hair from a beauty store in your city. Choose the length and color you want so you can easily cut and style it. The hair will usually be arranged in layers or tracks. Do not buy synthetic hair because you want your toupee to look natural.

2. Purchase a wig cap. Wig caps are unisex and cost less than $5. Place the wig cap on the Styrofoam head, making sure it firmly covers the head.

3. Take hair out of package. Arrange and lay it out according to how you want to place it on the Styrofoam head.

4. Start applying bonding glue to a hair track with a paint brush. Place the glued track on the wig cap. Start gluing the rest of the tracks starting from the base all the way up to the top of the head, pressing each track firmly to keep them in place. Cover all the head and make sure you are not able to see the wig cap.

5. Blow dry the entire Styrofoam head after you have finished gluing all the tracks to the head. This will dry the glued tracks quickly. Only use the medium heat settings on your blow dryer.

6. Take your finished toupee along with the Styrofoam head to a hairstylist to have it cut and styled. Enjoy your new natural looking toupee.
