Although the iPod Nano 3rd generation looks slick on the outside, many people are more interested at the technology placed inside. A person who wants to get a good view inside a 3rd generation iPod Nano can do so, but he should be careful of the fragile parts.

Things You'll Need:

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Spudger

How to Take Apart an iPod Nano 3rd Generation

  1. Step 1

Use a small, thin flat head screwdriver to remove the front casing from the back casing. The screwdriver should be placed in between the 2 sides and used as a lever to lift one side from the other. There are 3 locking tabs on the left, 3 on the top, and 2 on the right.

  2. Step 2

Turn the iPod Nano on its face and insert the screwdriver into each of the 6 screws holding the casing and logic board together and turn until the screws are loose. Lift up on the logic board slowly. It will still be connected to the click wheel cable.

  3. Step 3

Disconnect the click wheel cable by pulling on it firmly, yet gingerly. Turn the iPod over and disconnect the display cable in the same way.

  4. Step 4

Pry the display screen up with a spudger. The display case is held along the side of the iPod with adhesive.

  5. Step 5

Pick up the click wheel and its casing and push firmly on it. The wheel is held in place by adhesive, so it may not pop off all at once.

  6. Step 6

Remove the battery from the casing by sliding it out. Lay all the pieces of the iPod on the table and examine. You have now taken apart an iPod Nano 3rd generation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take apart the iPod over a table to make sure you catch any loose, small pieces that may come out.
  • Carelessly prying up the display could cause it to crack. Take your time and be careful.
