The McAfee company offers a wide range of computer software meant to protect your PC from threats such as malicious virus software or hackers looking to steal your personal information. The UVScan program is the virus-scanning portion of the McAfee security suite. If you surf the Internet regularly, you should run the UVScan program daily to make sure your computer hasn't become infected with a virus.

From Quick Guide: MacAfee Anti Virus 101
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Insert the McAfee installation disc into your computer's CD drive or double-click on the installation file if you purchased a digital copy of the program online. Click on "Continue" when a new prompt appears asking if you want to run the program.

  2. Step 2

Click on the "I Agree" button when the license agreement pops up on the screen. Click on the "Next" button and then enter in the registration key that will be located in the user manual or in the e-mail that was sent to you if you are using a digital version.

Click on "Install" and wait for the installation process to finish. Navigate to the desktop and double-click the McAfee virus scan icon. Click on the "Virus Scan" button at the left side of the screen.

  4. Step 4

Click on the "Update" button at the top left corner of the window and then wait for the latest virus detection information to download from the McAfee website. Click on the "Scan" icon. Click on the "Whole Computer" button if you want your entire hard drive to be scanned for virus programs. Click on "Specific files and folders" if you want to search a few areas of the hard drive where you suspect there might be a virus.

  5. Step 5

Click on the check boxes corresponding to the areas of your computer you want to scan if you chose the second option, such as the C:\ drive or your temporary Internet folder. Choose the "Start Scan" option to begin the scan of the selected areas on your hard drive.

  6. Step 6

Wait for the scan to finish and then click on "Remove Selected Problems" if McAfee UVScan located any virus software installed on your computer's hard drive.

Tips & Warnings
  • You should always update the McAfee virus scanning software at least once a week so that it knows about the most recent virus threats to search for on your computer.
  • Virus scanners can occasionally falsely identify a benign file as an infected one. You may want to make backup copies of your most important files and programs to an external source before running the UVScan.
