Step 1
imageThe first step is that one should be in a good enough health and physical conditioning to be able to swim. The more demanding the water sport, the greater the requirement for good health and physical conditioning. Know your physical limitations and follow medical direction regarding your limits. Don’t over-exert yourself.
-
Step 2
imageAnother step to ensure swimming safety is to never swim alone. Use the buddy system. Let people know where you are. If there are lifeguards available, swim near them. If you are unsure of your swimming skills stay in the shallows. Never swim in water which is too deep for you if you do not think you are a good swimmer. Use a floatation device if you find yourself in deep water. Approved personal floatation devices should be on any boating or sailing vessel. Consult local harbor, coast guard, boating resources in your area to find out about the safety requirements for your vessel.

Step 3
imageAnother important step regarding swimming safety is to have knowledge of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Know how to give CPR is a valuable took to save a life if necessary.
