How to Make the Ultimate Margarita

A margaritas makes for a good summertime drink.

Enjoyed by social drinkers on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border, the margarita is a much-loved 20th-century invention. The drink has been celebrated in magazines, bartenders' guides and even in song, and is served both as a frozen cocktail or simply on the rocks. It is a relatively simple concoction made from tequila and lime, and combined with ice and liqueurs.

Things You'll Need

• Margarita glasses (wide-brimmed)
• Margarita salt (coarse)
• 5 limes
• 1/4 to 1/3 cup orange liqueur
• 1/4 to 1/3 cup triple sec
• 1 tablespoon sugar
• 1 cup gold tequila
• 3 to 6 oz. of lager or Mexican-style beer
• Ice (small cubes or crushed)
• Juice squeezer or press
• Pitcher, cocktail shaker or blender

Instructions

1. Press or squeeze the juice of at least four limes. Set the juice aside.

2. Pour triple sec, tequila and orange liqueur in pitcher, blender or cocktail shaker. Add sugar and lime juice.

3. Agitate the mix for at least 20 to 30 seconds.

4. Salt the margarita glasses by pressing the rims down onto a disc of coarse salt, and gently twisting.

5. Add beer or lager to the margarita mix, as well as ice. Agitate again.

6. Pour the margarita mix into the glasses. If desired, garnish the glass rims with a wedge or wheel of lime.
