Step 1
Take a look at your most recent cell phone bill and see how many minutes were used. Did you use all of your minutes? So many people have plans with too many minutes and throw money away. Unless if they are with Cingular, those minutes do not rollover and it is money down the drain. Downgrade your plan or change your habits to talk less on the cell phone so you can decrease the amount of minutes on your monthly plan.
-
Step 2
What data plans do you have? Do you have to have unlimited texting or could you go with a set amount of texts for much less money? This could mean a difference of $10-15 a month. If you have a data plan, do you use it? Many people have the data plan just to have it but don't actually need it. Assess how much you use it and if it is worth it- if not, this can save you $20 or more a month depending on the plan you pay for.
-
Step 3
Look at your cell phone provider and see if they offer company discounts. I paid full price until I found out that the company my husband works for qualified us for a discount of 8% off of our bill! Lastly, if you can add family lines, then you can save a ton. Instead of paying for two sepereate individual plans, go with the lowest cost, or middle plan under the family plan and you will still save money on your monthly bill! We went from two 450 minute plans at 49.99 a month plus taxes to a 700 minute plan (with rollover minutes) for 69.99 a month plus taxes (minus our 8% discount).

on 5/28/2009 Good advice! Another thing to think about is whether you could get by with a pre-paid phone, where you only get charged for the minutes you use. if you only use your cell phone occasionally, it can save you a lot of money, too.
