Applications that run under Windows Vista many times have requirements to either enable or disable the "Autorun" or "Autoplay" feature that will start and run an application or program from a CD or DVD the moment it is placed into your CD/DVD drive. This article provides a quick procedure for doing this without the use of third party applications (using only the utilities supplied with Windows Vista).

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • This procedure and nothing more - no third party applications :)
  1. Step 1

First, open the CD/DVD drive and remove any disks that are in the drive.

  2. Step 2

Now, click Start then type "autoplay" into the Search box, then double click the icon that appears in the left pane.

  3. Step 3

When the Autoplay utility appears, you are presented with the option to change the action Vista will perform for the various types of programs and media you may use. So, for example, if you do not want Vista to autoplay software, then change the default to "Take no Action" and the next time you place a CD or DVD that has an autoplay into the drive, Vista will ignore autoplay and the software will have to be started manually by clicking Start, then double click Computer, then double click the CD/DVD drive icon, then double click the software on the disk (disabling autoplay is a good idea if you need to increase the security of your PC environment by preventing the autoplay feature from automatically starting malware before you have a chance to scan the disk with an antivirus program).

  4. Step 4

Make changes as needed to the media types listed in the Autoplay utility that apply to your particular PC work environment.
