Medical billing is a must for any medical practice, including hospitals, individual practitioners, dentists, chiropractors and more. All of those offices need support. You can start your own, online, with the right experience.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

You should have the right experience in order to start your medical billing practice, or have someone on your team that has the right background. You might want to have some experience working in an actual hospital or any medical environment. You might consider also specializing your online medical billing service to hospitals, dental, etc.

  2. Step 2

You will need to ensure you have a business license. If you are offering your services as a freelancer, you still might want to consider getting incorporated. You should always check with your local government about their rules for starting a business.

You should also put a business plan together. This information would include what services you are specifically selling, the rates you will charge for businesses, the best marketing plan, an estimate or goal as to how much you would make the first year, etc.

  3. Step 3

Set up a website, or pay someone to set it up for you. It should include details as to your background and experience, where you are localized, your contact information, and details about your services. You might also consider listing your price estimates, or have people call for a quote.

  4. Step 4

Once you have established your business, your next step is marketing. Marketing will include creating a service letter, describing the services you provide, and mailing it to local businesses. You can also call and ask to talk with someone about offering your services. Your best bet will be local markets, doctors you can talk with face to face about what you can do. You should also be able to pick up the data you need at the offices that require it.

Tips & Warnings
  • You don't have to have experience yourself in order to start this business. You could hire on others who have experience, and then sell those services to local businesses.
  • Avoid sending emails while marketing. Most likely, the materials will become lost or deleted. Only send emails if you have established yourself, and are already on talking terms with clients.
