Teaching a Little League baseball player to bunt can help a team to win more games. Bunting a baseball, for young players, must be taught the right way. Parents and coaches need to teach players to bunt before they learn to hit a baseball. This eHow article will teach you how to teach the skill of bunting.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Protective helmet
  • Baseball bat
  • Baseball
  • Home plate
  1. Step 1

Start by instructing the baseball player to stand in the batter's box facing the pitcher. (These instructions are for a right handed batter.) Place his feet towards the front of the batter's box, spread apart about two feet. Test the weight of the baseball bat and verify that it is not too heavy.

  2. Step 2

Then, tell the baseball hitter to loosely grab the bottom of the bat with his left hand. Guide his right hand up the bat towards the middle. Now, ask him to remove his right hand from the bat.

  3. Step 3

Now, inform the Little League player to make a "finger pistol" with his right hand. Point his right thumb towards the sky and his right pointer finger towards the pitcher's mound. (His hand should look like a gun.)

  4. Step 4

Afterwards, teach the young batter to lightly hold the middle of the bat with the two fingers. Position his fingers so that they are behind the bat and away from the incoming baseball. Look at his fingers and close the space if they are protruding to the sides of the bat.

  5. Step 5

Finally, throw a baseball towards the batter. Tell him to stick out the bat and "catch the ball with the bat." Angle the bat so that it is parallel with the ground. Allow the ball to hit the bat and land on the ground in fair territory. Practice this until the Little League baseball player is comfortable with bunting a baseball.

Tips & Warnings
  • Start bunting early and often to produce a complete baseball player.
  • Never bunt with all fingers wrapped around the bat. This could cause serious injury to a player's hand or fingers.
