How to Make X-Ray Glasses

X-ray glasses have been a novelty item since the early 20th century. They were used primarily as a comic gag, as wearing the glasses did not particularly grant x-ray vision. However, the novelty still lives on even today, where a pair of x-ray glasses can be used for a cheap, corny joke to add an extra laugh at a party or get-together. All you need are simple materials to use together, and you can have your own pair of x-ray glasses.

Things You'll Need

  • Cardboard (preferably 1 square foot)
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Coloring markers

Instructions

    • 1

Draw an outline of the x-ray glasses with your pencil on the piece of cardboard. The main components you need to draw are the frames and the arms of the glasses. Each lens should be drawn with a big, dark spiral, which is the comedic trade mark of all x-ray glasses.

    • 2

Cut out the design with your scissors carefully. Use the pointed end of your scissors or your pencil to punch a 1/4-inch hole in the middle of each lens. It should be big enough for you to see through, but small enough to hide your eyes.

    • 3

Fold the arms of the glasses. These will be resting on your ears, so make sure the part touching your skin is smoothed out. Otherwise, you might get irritated skin from the rough cardboard rubbing on your ear.

    • 4

Color your glasses with markers. Make sure to draw over the spirals with black to emphasize the comedic gag of your x-ray glasses. There is no need to color the inside portion of the cardboard, since this will not be visible to others.
