How to Play a D7-Chord on the Guitar

This article will teach you how to play an open position D7 Chord on the guitar. Seventh Chords are built from the first, third, fifth, and flat seventh degrees of the Major Scale and are used to add tension to a piece of music.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 6-String Acoustic or Electric Guitar
  1. Step 1

    Place your first (index) finger behind the first fret on the second string of the guitar. Frets are the metal ridges on the fingerboard of the guitar. The guitar strings are number from 1 to 6 with the first string being the thinnest string and the sixth string being the thickest.

  2. Step 2

    Place your second (middle) finger behind the second fret on the third string of the guitar.

  3. Step 3

    Place your third (ring) finger behind the second fret on the first string.

  4. Step 4

    Avoid playing the fifth and sixth strings in this D7 chord.

  5. Step 5

    Strum from the fifth string down to the first string ensuring that each note sounds clean and clear.
