Repair a Cordless Phone Headset

Cordless phone headsets are great for homes and offices. You can keep your hands free while taking calls and making conversations. After a while, though, the cable near the connector can fray or break. Instead of purchasing a new one, you can save money by replacing the broken cable and extend the headset's life.

Things You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • Wire strippers
  • Audio cable
  • Electrical tape
  • New audio connector (the same as the existing connector)
  • Crimper or solder (depending upon the type of connector)

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old end. Using a pair of scissors, cut the old tip off the headset about one quarter inch from the end or fray.

    • 2

Strip bare about one-half inch of the existing cable.

    • 3

If the remaining cable is too short, splice in additional wire. Strip both ends of the new cable. Twist each wire of the old cable to a wire of the new cable. Wrap tightly with electrical tape.

    • 4

Add the new connector. One wire will be used for the microphone and the other for the speaker. The exact connection will depend upon the type of audio connector you purchased. Follow the diagram on the back of the package to ensure proper connection. Be sure to put a boot, a flexible rubber covering, on the cable before adding the connector.

    • 5

Use the crimper or solder to keep the new connector firmly in place.

    • 6

Pull up the boot. The boot should sit securely over the end of the connector and cover any exposed cable.

    • 7

Test the headset to make sure you added the audio connector correctly.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have another broken headset, such as one with faulty ear phones, you can snip the plug from the end and splice it onto the cable.
