Install a Spa Pump

You might need to install a spa pump to replace a pump that no longer works or if one doesn't exist. All pumps are driven by an electric motor. Before installing, check the motor to verify that it is working before changing the pump.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Spa pump
  • Box wrench
  1. Step 1

Locate the area where the pump will be installed. In a portable spa, where the equipment is contained inside the cabinet of the spa, the pump and motor will be located in that area. With an in-ground spa, the pump is located in an area away from the spa, along with the pump motor, filter and other equipment.

  2. Step 2

Disconnect or turn off the power to the motor for safety.

  3. Step 3

Determine how the pump is supposed to be mounted to the motor. Most pumps are mounted on the shaft of the motor with a number of bolts.

  4. Step 4

Locate the water supply to the pump, which comes from the spa and is called the suction side of the pump.

  5. Step 5

Locate the outlet side, or discharge side, which returns water to the spa from the pump.

  6. Step 6

Make sure the pump being installed has the proper fittings and lines up with the suction and discharge pipes. Also check to make sure the bolt holes on the pump match up with mounting holes on the motor.

  7. Step 7

Attach the pump to the motor with the bolts using the proper size wrench, usually a 9/16- or 5/8-inch box wrench.

  8. Step 8

Attach the suction and discharge lines to the pump.

  9. Step 9

Turn the power on and turn on the motor and pump.

  10. Step 10

Check for leaks. If you find one, tighten the fittings or the bolts until the leak stops.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure there is water in the spa. Do not run the pump dry.
