How to to Make Your Party Fun
Make your party fun and memorable by choosing just the right theme. Suffering through a cold northern winter? Host a beach party. Throw a color-themed party at which all food, decorations and attire has to be the selected hue. For history or movie buffs, invite guests to come in period costume or dressed as their favorite Hollywood character. Wine-tasting parties or chili cook-offs are good ways to get all guests involved. Or host a mystery party at which all guests play a role in a short mystery play they have to solve. Does this Spark an idea?

Select a date and invite guests at least two weeks in advance. If you're hosting a theme party, invitations should match the theme and explain it to guests -- dress in black and white clothes, wear a favorite team's sports jersey or bring a big pot of your favorite chili. This sets the tone and gives guests time to prepare.
-
2
Select appropriate music, food, decorations and entertainment. Purchase the items at least a week before your party rather than leaving things until the last minute. This allows you to prepare food and do some decorating ahead of time. Be sure you have your own outfit ready in advance.

Prepare as much of the food in advance as you can. Clean your home the day before the party. Finish putting up decorations. Pick up any last-minute items -- fresh foods, ice, extra chairs -- early on the day of the event. Play upbeat music as guests arrive.

Welcome all the guests as they arrive. Make sure they all have a drink or something to eat. Introduce newcomers to other party guests. If most guests know each other, allow 20 to 30 minutes for guests to mingle, chat and catch up with friends. If most guests don't know each other, play a short ice-breaker game or seat people at a table with strangers they might enjoy. Mingle with all your guests and be sure all of them are engaged with others.

Pursue whatever games or activities you have planned as part of the theme. Focus on events that involve all guests, or divide them into teams to compete against each other. Allow for breaks between events so guests can refresh their drinks or get a snack. Avoid long, drawn-out activities so guests don't get bored.
