Pet owners often use commercial carpet deodorizers and air fresheners to eliminate pet odors in the home. Typically, you sprinkle the deodorizer on the affected area and vacuum it up. If you want to avoid the expense of purchasing such cleaners, consider making your own. Not only will the cleaner eliminate unpleasant odors, but it will help to naturally repel fleas and ticks. The homemade powder can be used for carpets, rugs, pet bedding and furniture. After applying the powder to the surface, leave it in place for approximately 15 to 20 minutes, then vacuum it up. Things You'll Need

  • 2 cups baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
  • 2 tbsp. borax
  • 2 tbsp. dried lavender flowers
  • 2 tbsp. dried tansy flowers
  • 1/2 tsp. orris root powder
  • 1/2 tsp. lavender oil or other essential oil
  • Plastic container with shaker lid

Instructions

      Mix all of the dry ingredients except the baking soda together.

      Add the lavender essential oil. Mix well.

      Add the baking soda. Mix well.

      Transfer the mixture into the plastic container. It will last for one year. be sure to use often.
