How to Clip Rabbit's Nails Safely
A rabbit's nails are constantly growing and can grow to be very long and sharp, and will eventually be uncomfortable for him and unsafe for you. Cutting his nails takes patience and concentration, but after a time or two, the process should much more smoothly.

- Cornstarch or flour in case of bleeding
- Towel

You may need an assistant to clip your rabbit's nails. Having a helper who isn't afraid of your rabbit is best. If you are going at it alone, don't fear. It can be done. Hold your rabbit in a way that you both are comfortable, cradling him until he is calm. With a few drops of water, gently separate the fur from his nails to examine the nails.

Determine the type of nail your rabbit has. If the nails are pink and the tips are white, you are to only cut the white part. The pink is called the "quick" and if cut, will cause moderate to severe bleeding, and even infection. If the nails are dark, use the flashlight to find the quick so you will know how far to cut.

Begin to clip the nails, starting with the front paws, one by one making smooth, firm cuts. Speak softly to your rabbit if he seems nervous and offer treats if necessary. If you happen to cut the quick, put cornstarch or flour on the nail and soothe your rabbit. Cutting the quick can be painful, but your rabbit will be okay in a few days.

After you are done, offer you rabbit cardboard to file his nails if there are any rough edges. Allowing the rabbit to do this is better than filing the nails yourself, in most cases, but it is up to you.

Tips & Warnings
If you are clipping alone, wrap the rabbit in a towel, only exposing one paw at a time. A rabbit will kick if harmed or feel threatened. If your rabbit struggles, let go immediately and allow him to calm.
If wrapping your rabbit in a towel, be aware of the pressure you are placing on him. This may make him even more afraid to get the procedure. The first time or two may take a while. Some rabbits only let you clip a paw, even one nail at a time.
