How to Apply for Scholarships During The Summer

Summer is a great time to apply for scholarships! Use this downtime find scholarships, write essays, get recommendations, and plan your work.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Email address
• Fastweb account
• List of references
• Word processor

1. Register for a free Fastweb account and answer all of the questions. Register at www.fastweb.com

2. Go to the top of the "Deadline" column and click on the word "Deadline." This will sort the scholarships by due date. Select scholarships and essays with due dates in September, October, November, December, and January.

3. 
   Make Notes

   Select up to 5 scholarships and essay contests to enter. Read all of the directions for each scholarship/essay contest. Note the number of words needed for each essay, number of recommendations needed for each scholarship, and note if you'll need someone to nominate you.

4. Develop a time line for each competition. Set a date to complete drafts of essays. Establish a date to send letters requesting recommendations. Choose someone to proof-read your essays and letters. Select the date during the summer when you will have all of your materials assembled and "ready-to-go."

5. Get started. Write the essays, collect the recommendation letters, complete the reports. In short, do the work.

   Certified Mail

   When everything is complete, mail the application packets to the scholarship granting organization. Be sure to keep copies of EVERYTHING. Mail all of the documents certified and keep the receipt with the tracking number in a convenient location.

Tips & Warnings

• Check your tracking number to verify that your application was received.
• Call to verify receipt. You'll want to speak to a live person.
• Be prepared to interview with a scholarship committee. Winning application packets will get invited to participate in the next phase of the scholarship competition.
