How to Minimize the Effects of Hair Loss

Hair loss can have a devastating effect regardless of gender. Although there are many reasons for hair loss, the result is the same—depressing and frustrating. Underlying conditions causing hair loss can range from cancer to nutritional deficiencies. Although medical personnel often rely on a process of elimination to diagnose the root cause, there is much that hair loss suffers can do in the meantime to minimize the negative effects of thinning hair. If you are currently suffering from hair loss, here are some tips to help you reduce the thinning effects.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Create volume with a layered hairstyle. It’s easier to minimize the thinning areas with shorter hair. On the other hand, long hair will separate at the part line and make the thinning areas more noticeable.

  2. Step 2

Wear bangs or a face-framing style to emphasize your facial features instead of the thinning hair. Flipping the ends of your hair will have the same effect.

  3. Step 3

Use root booster products like hair spray, gel or conditioners. Such products provide volume and help conceal the thinning areas.

  4. Step 4

Find out whether you’re a cool or warm person, and choose your makeup colors accordingly to accentuate your facial features and draw attention away from your hair. Wear colors that flatter your complexion to draw attention to your face.

  5. Step 5

Consider wearing jewelry like earrings or a necklace to draw attention away from your hair loss. A silk scarf will also do the trick.

  6. Step 6

Request a military hair cut if you’re a male experiencing hair loss. This type of haircut makes hair appear thicker. Other hairstyles for men include short waves or spikes. Shag hairstyles also work for thinning hair because the longer hair can minimize the thinning areas.

  7. Step 7

Add facial hair to your style if you’re a male. Growing a beard or mustache will draw attention to your face instead of to the thinning areas or to a receding hairline.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use organic products as much as possible. It's important to keep the hair follicles toxin-free to prevent further hair loss and promote new hair growth.
  • Avoid using hair extensions if you're a woman. They will add stress to your hair and accelerate the hair loss.
  • Avoid barrettes or hair pieces. They separate your hair and draw more attention to your thinning areas.
