A scarf is a rectangle, with two short sides and two long sides. Put one of the short sides of the scarf against the back of your head. Bring the corners of the short side that is touching the back of your head around to your forehead and tie them together in a knot. This will result in a sort of headband with a long tail trailing down your back.

Take one of the long sides that is trailing down your back and put it up and over your hair. Do this again with the other side. Now you have a head band with a long cylinder, or tunnel, running down your back with your hair running inside it down its length.

Take the end of the cylinder and begin to twist it. Be sure that the hair and the sides of the scarf all stay in the tunnel configuration. Twist the end over and over until the twist goes up the entire cylinder and touches your head in the back. Once it is sufficiently tight, bring the end of the cylinder that you have been holding while twisting and tuck it into the headband at the front. If you want the head wrap to have more stability, pinning it is an option.
