How to Make Soundproof Glass

There are several ways to make glass (almost) soundproof. You can purchase thicker glass or you can laminate a sheet of clear plastic between two pieces of window glass to eliminate up to 90 percent of unwanted sound in many cases, or you can build what is called a "window plug," which will keep out as much as 90 percent of unwanted sound and can be removed during the day to allow light and air in. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the window frame of the window that needs soundproofing. Measure from one edge of the frame to the other, and not the size of the pane of glass itself.

    • 2

Cut a piece of Luann board to fit snugly into the window frame.

    • 3

Drill a small hole in the upper center of the Luann and tie a string through the hole. This string will help you remove the window plug from the window later, since the plug itself should fit entirely snugly within the frame.

    • 4

Measure the distance between the Luann when it is fitted into the frame and the glass. If there is more than 3 inches of space then purchase enough 2-inch thick Super Soundproofing Mat (see Resources) to cover the Luann board completely.

    • 5

Glue the Super Soundproofing Mat to the inside surface of the board using your contact cement. When the board is shoved into the window frame, the soundproofing mat will be on the inside, between the board and the window glass. There should be at least 1 inch of dead air between the soundproofing mat and the glass when the mat is fitted into the window frame.

Tips & Warnings

  • You want an air space (dead air) between the window glass and the soundproofing mat you have constructed.
