An A# (Bb) Barre Chord at the First Fret
An A# (Bb) Barre Chord at the First Fret

The A# (Bb) chord in this article is a "major" chord. Major chords are known for their bright, happy quality. This type of chord is what guitarists call a "barre chord."

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place your first (index) finger across strings one through five behind the first fret to form what is called a "barre." Practice playing all of the strings that you are "barring" with the goal of getting each one to sound clearly. Practice this before using the your other fingers in the barre chord. This will strengthen your index (first) finger, making your barre chord playing more efficient.

  2. Step 2

Use the tip of your third (ring) finger to barre strings two, three, and four at the third fret.

  3. Step 3

Allow the tip of your first (index) finger to rest on the sixth string just enough to mute it so it doesn't vibrate while strumming.

  4. Step 4

Strum the entire chord from the fifth string down to the first string.

Tips & Warnings
  • Play each string individually before strumming to ensure each one is vibrating freely and sounding cleanly.
