How to Mix Colors in Iris Plants

There are many varieties and colors of Iris plants. Many gardens feature Iris plants because of the their bold colors and large showy flowers that bloom in the spring. Iris is a perennial plant, which means they will multiply and grow each year without replanting. Mixing different colors of Iris in one bed makes for a wonderful view. Make a specialty garden by mixing colors of Iris plants.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Iris plants, all colors and types
  • Hand shovel
  • Hand trowel
  1. Step 1
    Bearded Iris
    Bearded Iris

    Purchase or dig up different colors of Iris plants. Make sure the plants are marked by color for correct planting.

  2. Step 2
    Japanese Iris
    Japanese Iris

    Lay out the design of the specialty garden by placing the iris plants by flowering season first, such as bearded iris bloom in the spring. Then combine Japanese iris, which blooms in the summer. Separate Siberian iris, which blooms in the late to early fall.

  3. Step 3

    Position the bulbs or plants so that the bright hues are planted in the front, light shades in the back and contrasting or medium colors in the middle for blending.

  4. Step 4

    Plant the bulbs or plants at least 3 inches deep in the designed area with the hand shovel and trowel. By positioning the bulbs by flowering season and color, the garden will be a focal point all summer as the bulbs will seem to be continuously blooming.
