Things You'll Need:

- Comb
- Hair dye
- Hair dye brush applicator
- Foil
- Blow dryer

Step 1
Prepare your hair. It is best to work with freshly washed hair when attempting to create foil highlights. Make sure there is no product in your hair. Certain products contain ingredients that may change the final color. Your hair should be completely dry and tangle free.
-
Step 2
Section your hair. Use a comb to section your hair off with clips to allow an easier application process. Section your hair into three parts. Part your hair where it naturally falls. Gather the top layers of your hair around the crown of your head. Hold off the section you have gathered with a hair clip. Do the same with the middle layers of your hair and the bottom layers.
-
Step 3
Decide what look you are trying to achieve. You can highlight your hair to give you a more edgy appearance or to enhance your hair's natural beauty. Highlighting thicker sections of hair will create a more edgy and bold look. The thinner the sections of hair you highlight, the more natural your highlights will appear.
-
Step 4
Foil your hair. Work with one section of hair at a time, starting with the top layer. Divide the piece of hair, and place the foil under the piece of hair, making sure the edge of the foil touches your root. Use a hair dye brush applicator to apply hair dye over the foil and onto your hair. Then fold the foil in half while making sure the entire strip of hair is contained within the foil. Now fold the right and left sides of the foil inward to create a tight lock. Continue until you have foiled the remainder of your hair that you'd like highlighted.
-
Step 5
Apply heat to the foil. Most dyes process more quickly under heat and foil highlights allow you to take advantage of heat activation. Use a blow dryer set to low heat about 6 inches from your head. Move the blow dryer back and forth over the areas of your hair that have foil. Continue for about five minutes, then let your hair sit for an additional 10 to 25 minutes.
-
Step 6
Remove the foil from your hair. Reverse the folding process to unfold the foil. At this point, you don't need to worry about dye touching unwanted areas of hair. Immediately after removing the foil, rinse your hair thoroughly. Once you have rinsed your hair, style as normal.
