Step 1
Timing is everything. You have to get used to the timing of the pitcher and everyone is different. Just before he is about to release the ball pull straight back on the right analog stick to step into the swing.
-
Step 2
Don't swing at garbage. A common mistake, and one I make a lot, is to swing at every pitch. It's hard to judge the bad ones in time but really focus on the position of the ball. You may time everything correctly but a pitch out of your batter's wheel house isn't going over the fence.

Step 3
Throw the analog stick forward just before the ball gets to the plate. It can be difficult to judge at times especially with off speed pitches but you will get the hang of it with practice.
-
Step 4
Use the left stick to guide where the ball will go. For home runs I like to hold the stick to the direction the batter would pull the ball and slightly upward. For example a right handed batter, I would hold the left stick all the way left and a little up. The other way around for lefties.
