Step 1
First decide what country you want to go and teach in. Some countries make more money, some are in warmer climates, and some have have great parks or other types of recreation. What ever is important to you is where you should go. Maybe you have always wanted to go to Japan, that is probably the best reason to go there.
-
Step 2
Go get a English Certificate such as TEFL, TESL, TOIEC, or TOEFL. There are many different ones to choose from. Some are expensive and offered in a classroom and some are offered online which may be a bit less expensive. It is not necessary to get one of these certificates, but you will have more options in the long run and possibly a hight salary with an English Cerificate.
-
Step 3
While you are getting your certificate, start looking at different English teaching websites. There are many to choose from (just google English teaching jobs). If you post your resume on them, you will most likely be swamped with many offers. Some of these will be scams so it is best to do your homework. It is also possible that your school where you are getting your certificate can hook you up with a reliable recruiter and place you there. I used www.teflinstitute.com. It is expensive to get their certificate, but I got placed in a pretty good situation here in South Korea. Also, if you can contact someone in the country you would like to work in, they might be able to get you a job or some contacts that are trustworthy.
-
Step 4
You have you certificate, your have a couple of job leads, now you will have phone interviews, these are pretty easy. Be confident on the phone and talk clearly and slowly. The person who is interviewing you will most likely not be a native English speaker.
-
Step 5
Once you have gotten the job, the school should take care of the visa process for you. You shouldn't have to pay any money for this, the school will do it for you.
-
Step 6
Once you know where you are going, get a book and read up on the cultures and what to expect. If you are completely unprepared, then you may have some culture shock. The more you know, the better your experience will be.
-
Step 7
My experience has been great. It reminds me of being in college again. You meet a bunch of great people from all over the world and the job is pretty easy. Good luck and if you like music, I just came out with a new CD, Mike Brumm "Roll", Download it today!
