A boaters license is a responsible decision, as it makes you safer on the water. This is why most states now require some form of boaters license before you can legally hit the water. Having a boaters license has other benefits as well. It saves you money on your boating insurance and instills confidence in the hearts of your passengers.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine what kind of boat you have. Requirements vary by state, but usually a boaters license is required if your boat operates at more than 10 horsepower. You will also need a boaters license if you use your boat for commercial purposes.

  2. Step 2

Determine your state's individual requirements. All states require you to take some form of boaters education and water safetytraining before you can get your boaters license. Contact your state's Department of Natural Resources to determine the requirements for a boaters license in your state.

  3. Step 3

Complete your courses. The courses for your boaters license usually only last a weekend. Some states even allow you to meet your boaters license requirements online. Courses for your boaters license usually cost between $50 and $100.

  4. Step 4

Bring your certificate of completion to the bureau of motor vehicles. You will also need to bring your state's required forms of identification. Most states require you to be at least 17 to get a boaters license.

  5. Step 5

Pay your fees. Usually, acquiring a boaters license involves a fee, which ranges from state to state, anywhere from $20-$75. You may also have to buy a title for your boat, if your state requires it.

  6. Step 6

Carry your license with you. If you get caught not carrying your boaters license, you could be fined upwards of $500 and even face jail time in some instances.
