Step 1
Unplug the computer from the outlet. If you don't you could electrocute yourself or destroy the computer when you attempt to replace a motherboard battery.
-
Step 2
Wait 5 minutes for capacitors to lose their charge.
-
Step 3
Now open the side of the computer exposing the motherboard. Carefully look for the battery on the motherboard. Most will look like a watch battery. Some will look more like a AAA batteries wraped in plastic though.
-
Step 4
Once you find the battery look at how it is held on the mother board. Most have a small clip that holds the battery in place. If you are replacing a motherboard battery with a clip that sits on the battery check for a small clip on the side of the battery to slide it out.
-
Step 5
Using a small screwdriver to slide back any clips and take out the battery.
-
Step 6
Note the numbers on the battery and get an identical replacement. You can usually find them cheaper online, but most specialty battery stores will have them as well.
-
Step 7
Replace the motherboard battery with your new battery. Install it and close up and re-power the computer.
