How to Convert a Portable Generator to Natural Gas

If you have a gasoline-powered generator, you might want to convert it to natural gas. When gasoline prices rise, you can switch fuel sources without sacrificing power output.

Things You'll Need

  • Natural-gas conversion kit
  • Drill with special bit (specs available from your dealer depending on the make and model of your generator and conversion kit)
  • Soap and water solution

Instructions

    • 1

Unbolt the carburetor from the engine and remove it. Since the carburetor's job is to mix air and gasoline, you won't need a carburetor to run your generator on natural gas.

    • 2

Unscrew the float bowl. This is what holds the gasoline. Along with the float bowl, you will need to remove the needle and the high speed jet that supplies the fuel.

    • 3

Enlarge the passage where the gasoline jet was located by using the special drill bit. Be sure to follow the conversion kit's specs as the enlargement will depend entirely on the make and model of your generator.

    • 4

Seal all other passages with the sealant provided in the kit. There will be extra holes and passages that were necessary for running your generator on gasoline that won't be necessary if you use natural gas.

    • 5

Insert the natural gas jet and connect the gas fittings to the jet. Ensure that there are no leaks at the connection by spraying a soap and water solution on the connection. Turn on the gas and watch for bubbles. If you see any bubbles, there is a gas leak. Check and replace the fittings if this happens.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are inherent dangers to converting an engine designed to run on gasoline to natural gas. Always check the gas fittings for leaks and adhere to the specs for your specific make and model of your generator.
