Instructions

    • 1

Mark the footprint of the fireplace on the floor, using painter's tape. Then mark the dimensions of the fireplace against the wall.

    • 2

Cut one sheet of metal lath to dimensions to fit inside the dimensions marked by painter's tape on the wall. Cut another sheet of metal lath to fit the dimensions marked by painter's tape on the floor.

    • 3

Cut stones to fit flush against the wall (optional). If you choose to do this, use your masonry saw to cut the appropriate amount of stones, and put them in their own pile.

    • 4

Mix the mortar. Using your trowel, smear a generous layer of mortar onto each stone as you lay it.

    • 5

Lay down a base layer of stones in the footprint of the fireplace, so you have something to build upon. Keep building up the stones layer by layer.

    • 6

Use your hand to smush mortar into any cracks or gaps between the stones. When your fireplace has been built to the dimensions you want it.

    • 7

Cover the metal lath with a layer of grout if it is visible at the edges of the fireplace. Allow the mortar to set for 48 hours---and you'll have a brand-new fireplace.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always be sure to cover your working area with canvas or plastic tarp for easier clean-up.

  • Be sure to allow the mortar to fully set before lighting a fire in your new fireplace.
