How to Install Yahoo! Messenger Emoticons

Yahoo! Messenger is an instant messaging program that allows you to keep in contact easily with friends, family and co-workers. Yahoo! Messenger allows you to download and install emoticons to liven up your conversations. Emoticons are small pictures used to represent emotions such as happy, angry, excited and tired. There are a wide variety of emoticons available to represent almost any emotion. Adding these to your conversations will help show others exactly how you feel.

Instructions

1. Open Yahoo! Messenger and log in. Double-click the Yahoo! Messenger icon or go to "Start -- All Programs -- Yahoo! Messenger" to open the program. Type your username and password and click "Log In" to log in.

2. Click "Preferences" and choose "Messages" to enable the use of emoticons. Choose "Enable Emoticons" and click "Apply."

3. Move downloaded emoticons to the Yahoo! Messenger emoticon folder. Copy and paste all emoticons files to the following folder path in Windows Explorer -- "C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Media\Smileys." If you installed Yahoo! Messenger on a drive other than C:, then use that drive letter in place of C. To copy and paste, highlight all files you wish to move, press "Ctrl" + "C", open the folder listed above, and press "Ctrl" + "V."
   Most compatible Yahoo! Messenger emoticons are downloaded and installed automatically when you install Yahoo! Messenger.

4. Open a chat window and use the drop-down emoticon window to view your new emoticons. If they don't appear, log out of Yahoo! Messenger and close the application. Reopen Yahoo! Messenger and log back in. If the icons still don't appear, they aren't compatible.

5. Install and use Yahoo! Messenger hidden icons by typing the correct keyboard shortcuts during a chat conversation (see link in Resources).

Tips & Warnings

• If you can't remember the keyboard shortcuts for an emoticon, select the drop-down emoticon menu in your chat window to select an emoticon.
• Never download emoticons from sources you don't trust. These sites may place viruses on your system.
