Valentine's boxes are fun and functional crafts for children. Most kids make them in school, and they serve to hold Valentines from their classmates. Though some Valentine's boxes are simply colored boxes with hearts glued on them, some kids like to make their boxes shaped to look like animals. You can make penguin Valentine's boxes with two boxes and a few common crafts items.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rectangular box (approximately the size of a mens shoe box) Square box that fits on the short end of the rectangle box Brown craft paper Black tempera paint Construction paper (in red, white, black and yellow) Scissors Glue Tape
  1. Step 1

Wrap both boxes with brown craft paper. Secure it with transparent tape.

  2. Step 2

Stand the rectangular box on end, and glue the square box on top of it. This is the body and head of the penguin Valentine's box.

  3. Step 3

Paint both of the boxes with black tempera paint. This is washable craft paint for kids, so it's okay if your child gets a little on her clothing.

  4. Step 4

Cut hearts out of the white construction paper to fit on the fronts of the rectangular and square boxes. The heart on the rectangle box will be the white area on the penguin's chest, and the heart on the square box will be the penguin's face. The white heart that will be the Valentine penguin's face will need to be folded or cut to fit along the flat edge of the box. (See photo for example.)

  5. Step 5

Cut flippers out of black construction paper. Glue these on, one on each side of the penguin Valentine's box.

  6. Step 6

Use the red construction paper to cut red heart-shaped eyes for the penguin Valentine's box. Affix these to the penguin's face with glue.

  7. Step 7

Cut a piece of yellow construction paper to form the penguin's bill. Stick this to the penguin Valentine's box with the glue also. If you'd like, you can use the yellow construction paper to cut little feet for your penguin Valentine's box.

  8. Step 8

Cut a flap in the penguin Valentine's box wherever you wish to place it. This will allow classmates to place Valentine cards into the box and allow your child to remove the cards from the box. You can put the flap on the back of the rectangular box under one of the penguin's flippers or on the chest. Don't put the flap on the head, because the box is too small to hold many cards.
