Removing latex paint from tile is easier than it might seem. You do not have to spend endless hours scraping it off with a putty knife, or using a sander and throwing messy dust in all directions. In fact, both of these methods might even damage your tile, especially if it is ceramic. Instead, follow these tips to safely and easily remove latex paint from tile.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paintbrush or sponge
  • Gel paint remover
  • Old pieces of fabric or old rags
  • Clean rag
  • Warm water
  • Scouring pad
  1. Step 1

Use the paint brush or sponge to generously apply the gel paint remover to the paint. Only cover one area at a time that is as large as your piece of fabric. No bigger than 6 inches square is best.

  2. Step 2

Lay the fabric down over the gel and press lightly. The fabric will stick to the gel and the gel will slowly soak into the fabric. Let the fabric sit for 10 minutes, or until the gel soaks completely through. Use this time to cover another area.

  3. Step 3

Slowly remove the fabric. Start with a corner and peel it off the tile. The gel and paint, should come off with the fabric.

  4. Step 4

Use the warm water and a clean rag to remove the all traces of leftover gel and paint.

  5. Step 5

Examine the grout and make sure there is no paint in the grout. If there is, apply the gel, let it sit for a half hour and then scrub it carefully with a scouring pad.

Tips & Warnings
  • Resist the urge to use a putty knife to scrape at the paint, as this might leave marks on your tile.
