There are several easy options to explore for a business seeking to accept credit card payments.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet
  • Phone Line
  • Business License
  • Business Bank Account
  • Tax ID
  1. Step 1

Using the Internet, research several businesses offering merchants credit card processing options.

Decide whether a processing machine will be needed in store or if all sales are online. Paypal and other businesses like it offer everything needed to accept credit card payments online for a few per transaction.

  2. Step 2

Decide if you want to own equipment, rent equipment, or just process credit cards online to skip dealing with equipments.

  3. Step 3

Compare the different choices and call the companies to get more information including set up fees, monthly fees, per transaction charges.

It would be a good idea to write all the information down and possibly put in it a spreadsheet for quick comparison. Or just make a chart on a piece of paper.

  4. Step 4

Decide on your choice and set up an account with the chosen credit card processing company.

It may be necessary to gather some paperwork, business license, and business bank account information before the company can set up an account or deliver credit card processing equipment.

  5. Step 5

Learn how to use the credit card processing equipment through either an online demo or an in person demonstration.

  6. Step 6

Train all employees to use credit card processing equipment.

Tips & Warnings
  • Compare several different credit card processing businesses.
  • Estimate how much you plan to sell per transaction and for the year. Use these figures to see which credit card processing option will be the right one for your business.
  • Train your employees in privacy matters and identity theft issues before allowing them to process credit cards.
  • Ask other business owners in your network or field of business what credit card processing companies or equipment they prefer and why.
  • Try not to overestimate your projected sales because this number will need to be as accurate as possible to help you make the right choice for a credit card processing company.
