Step 1
Do some research. The more popular the vehicle is, the more you are likely to be paid. This is because there are more people out there looking for replacement parts for their cars. The Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, and Acura Integra tend to top this list.
-
Step 2
Identify the make, model and year of the vehicle. Be specific. If it was a special edition or has accessories that were not standard, be sure to make note of it. Some vehicles come in 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive. You have to know which one you have. Also write down the color.
-
Step 3
Call around to all the junk yards in your area. Ask them what they would be willing to pay for your particular vehicle. They will be vague since they can't say exactly until they see it. The more you tell them about the vehicle the more accurate they can be. Be warned that many junk yards will offer you a high price on the phone then offer you less when you get there. Be prepared to walk away.
-
Step 4
Drive the junk car to several junk yards if it runs. This is the best way to get the best price. If they don't offer you what you want you can simply drive away. You will also be offered more for a running vehicle than one that doesn't run.
-
Step 5
Tow the vehicle to the junk yards if it doesn't run. Find someone with a tow bar or tow dolly who can help you move the junk car. Do not pay to hire a tow truck. That will eat up all your profits.
-
Step 6
Ask for the junk yard to pick up your junk car. Some will do this if they want your junk car bad enough. Be sure to negotiate the tow fee before you make any deal. If they are charging you to take away your junk car then you are not getting a good deal.
