How to Help Conserve Water

Water is one of our precious natural resources. We all can take a few small steps to help conserve water.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Turn the faucet off while brushing your teeth. Also teach your children to turn the water off while brushing their teeth. This will turn into a lifelong habit saving many gallons of water that would have otherwise been run right down the drain.

  2. Step 2

Install a low-flow shower head on all showers in your home. This is an inexpensive fix that can save gallons and gallons of water. Also strive take shorter showers.

  3. Step 3

Check your toilet for leaks. The simplest method to check your toilet for leaks is to put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. Let it sit for about 30 minutes. Check the toilet bowl. If you see any food coloring, this means you have a leaking toilet. Get it fixed as soon as possible. Leaking toilets can waste a ridiculous amount of water.

  4. Step 4

Attach a rain barrel to one of the downspouts on your house. Use the collected rain water to water outdoor plants. You will be amazed at how much water your barrel will collect after just one rainfall!

  5. Step 5

Use a nozzle on your outdoor garden hose. This will shut the water off when it is not being used. Hose nozzles are inexpensive and available in a wide variety of styles. Also remember to turn the water off at the spigot when you are finished using the hose.

  6. Step 6

Make sure appliances are working to their full potential. Check the energy rating on all of your appliances. Consider updating your appliances if they are more than 5 years old. Dishwashers and clothes washers that run efficiently waste less water than older inefficient models.

Only run the dishwasher with a full load of dishes. Skip the pre-rinse cycle. You will conserve water and still have sparkling clean dishes.

on 7/7/2009 Another one: If you live in a climate where you must water your landscaping, switch from sprinklers to bubblers as much as you can. Don't water the sidewalk! 5*
