Step 1
Study for your CDL test.You must already have a drivers license in order to get a CDL in NJ. You must be 18 years old. Go to the NJMV agency site online and print out the CDL Manual. Study for the exam.

Step 2
Take the CDL Test.Go to your nearest NJMV agency. Bring your 6 point verification required by the State of NJ. Take your test for the permit. The fee for this permit is currently $35.00.

Step 3
Practice for the CDL Road test.You'll be allowed to take the road test 10 days after you pass your permit test. There are 3 different types of CDL licenses (A,B & C). Make sure you take the appropriate test which will depend on the type of vehicle you intend to drive. Practice over the 10 days or so that you have the permit. Then you will be ready to get a CDL in NJ.

Step 4
The road test.The road test is about 20 minutes long. Once you pass the road test for the CDL, go back to the NJMV Agency to get your CDL.
