It is not easy to slow down if you live in a fast-paced city or if you find yourself on the run frequently. However, there are some steps that we can take to have periods of calmness.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first step to being calm is to recognize what you are doing. What are you doing right now? Are you in a location and a circumstance that you can stop what you are doing? If not, plan a little time to place yourself where you are alone and without obligations or distractions.

  2. Step 2

The next step is to place yourself in a location where you can be calm. You need to be alone, in a place where you feel safe and some comfort, and not be distracted. If you are not in this place right now imagine what it would be like. Is it in a nature setting? Are you surrounded by trees? Do you hear birds chirping? Perhaps, you image yourself by the ocean and you hear the sounds of seagulls?

  3. Step 3

Once in this location, sit comfortably and be still. Have your arms by your side and don not move. Close your eyes. Think about the sensations of your body. If you feel that your muscles are tight, relax them. Make sure every muscle is relaxed and then begin to breathe slower. With each breath, think of the word 'relax' or think to yourself 'Ahh....' or 'I am relaxed'. Do this for a few minutes. Don't even think of time, just relax. Open your eyes and then go about your business again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take time to be calm at least once a day
  • Increase your time if you find you are experiencing too much stress in yourself
  • After a few attempts also try to visualize calm locations while you relax
  • Make sure you are alone and not in a location where you can be disrupted
