Step 1
Shop for groceries using a shopping list, and stick to the list. This is one of the most efficient and effective means for curbing impulse buying, saving not only money but time as well.
When writing your shopping list, take into account the coupons you have on hand and specials from the store’s weekly flyers and offers on the stores. -
Step 2
Do your homework. Go through the weekly flyers that your local grocery store mails out to find out what specials they have to offer. Visit the store’s website – many stores now have their sales and specials online.
-
Step 3
Don’t shop hungry. The sights and scents of the food in the store are far more irresistible when your tummy is rumbling. Eating before you go shopping will help to curb hunger-driven impulse buying.
-
Step 4
Go generic. There is often little difference between brand name products and generic or store label products. You can verify this for individual items by comparing the ingredients list on the product label. The savings you can realize are significant.
-
Step 5
Buy in bulk. Larger sized packages of the same product are typically cheaper than smaller packages. You can also get significant savings by shopping warehouse stores such as Costco and Sam’s club.
-
Step 6
Weigh your fruit, veggies and other produce in the store so that you know what the actual cost is for each item.
-
Step 7
Purchase a freezer. This enables you to stock up on meat and toerh freezable foods when they are on sale without worrying about it going bad. Split up large packages into smaller meal-size ones.

on 5/11/2009 never going shopping while hungry is probally the best advice you can give anyone on how to save money, thank you for the reminders. I almost never stick to my list but I am good for picking up items I don't need and then putting them on a shelf somewhere later down another isle... that way I get the satisfaction of having had put it into my cart...
