There are many types of twists: regular two-strand twists, four-strand twists, twists to start dreadlocks, etc. This article will tell you how to do the most basic of twists for long hair-a regular two strand.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shampoo and blow dryer
  • Comb
  • Hair styling gel (the thicker the better)
  • Rubber bands/ponytail holders/hair clips
  1. Step 1

Wash and blow dry your hair. Make sure there are no tangles; this hairstyle will be much more complicated otherwise.

  2. Step 2

Part your hair into four large sections. Use hair clips or ponytail holders to hold each section in place.

  3. Step 3

Part each section into smaller 1-inch sections. Choose a section, and split it in half. Comb out the halves (to ensure that there are no tangles) and apply hair gel to each one.

  4. Step 4

Twist the halves around each other tightly, starting at the scalp and working your way down to the ends. Secure the twist with a rubber band or other type of holder.

  5. Step 5

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for each section of hair. You should have a head full of twisted braids by the end of the process.

Tips & Warnings
  • You have the option to undo your twists later, which is called a twist out. The tighter the twists and the smaller the sections, the more wavy the twist out will be. The looser the twists and the bigger the sections, the less shape the twist out will have. Aloe vera gel is a popular choice for styling twists. So are cocoa butter and shea butter.
