How to Clean Laptop Vents

Save

Most laptops have two vents. One pulls in cool air and the other pushes out warm air. Both of these vents can become clogged with lint, dust and small debris as time passes, which can cause your laptop to overheat. Clean your vents regularly to keep your computer running efficiently.

Things You'll Need

  • Tweezers
  • Canned Air
  • Turn off the computer. The fan cannot be spinning while you clean your vents, so the computer must be powered down.

  • Pull out any large pieces of debris. If there's anything poking out through the vent, just pull it away with your fingers.

  • Using the tweezers, pull out any visible lint.

  • Spray the vent. Using canned air, spray into the vent to dislodge any smaller pieces of lint or dust.

  • Power the computer on. Let it run for a few minutes to see how well the fan spins. Some debris may be blown out of the vent.

  • Clean the fan. If it still isn't spinning properly, and if you're feeling adventurous, you can use a repair guide to disassemble your laptop and clean the fan itself.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sometimes large items, such as beads or pieces of crayon, can become lodged in the vent and/or fan. You will need to disassemble the laptop to remove these.
  • Carefully follow the disassembly instructions in the repair guide to prevent damage to your laptop.
