When buying replacement windows for your home, it is essential the windows are the correct size. Presumably, you are replacing windows to increase energy efficiency in your home and update its look.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure from left to right of your existing windows between the insides of the window jamb, beginning at the bottom of the window.

  2. Step 2

Write this measurement down, noting where you measured (it's helpful to draw a rough sketch of your window and fill in your measurements on your drawing). Take the same measurement in the middle and once more at the top since most windows aren't square. Fill in these measurements on your drawing and circle or highlight the narrowest width.

  3. Step 3

Measure from the bottom left of the overhead window jamb down to the top of the sill and fill this in on your drawing. Remeasure in the middle and far right, noting these measurements on your drawing. Circle or highlight the shortest height.

  4. Step 4

Take your drawing to your local home improvement store or to a window manufacturer, giving them your shortest height and narrowest width as your replacement window measurements (the ones you circled). Your replacement windows are sure to fit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Find out if your state offers a rebate on purchasing certain EnergyStar certified windows. You just might get a tax credit to help offset the cost of replacement windows.
