Replacing a zipper in a coat may seem daunting. In fact, you might prefer to buy a new coat rather than fix a broken zipper. But with a little time and patience, you can sew a new zipper in a coat. Before you start, look at how the current zipper is held in place, so you can duplicate the stitching.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small scissors or seam ripper
  • Zipper
  • Pins
  • Needle and thread or sewing machine
  1. Step 1

Use a small scissors or a seam ripper to remove the stitching that holds the old zipper in place. Pull out all the loose threads. Note how the zipper was held in place.

  2. Step 2

Find a new zipper the same length to put in the coat. Unzip the zipper so you have two parts.

  3. Step 3

Slide one side of the zipper between the layers of fabric where the old zipper was located. Use pins to hold the zipper in place. Repeat with the other half of the zipper. Zip the zipper up while it is still pinned to check that the two parts will align, and that they're facing the right way.

  4. Step 4

Using a sewing machine or a needle and thread, sew the zipper into the coat. Remove the pins as you go.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you buy a replacement zipper, select one that fits the color and length of the coat. Buy a zipper that is the right weight and is meant to be used in coats or jackets.
