How to Become a Real Estate Agent in New Zealand

To sell real estate in New Zealand, you must have a current Salesperson's Certificate of Approval from the New Zealand Real Estate Agents Licensing Board. To get a certificate, you must complete the Salesperson's Course.

    Attaining a Salesperson's Certificate of Approval

  1. Step 1

    Earn a Salesperson's Certificate by completing the class through a correspondence course, online or by attending classes at an accredited course provider. The course includes core classes as well as elective classes in fields such as residential sales, commercial sales and rural sales.

  2. Step 2

    Learn on the job and enter into a formal training agreement with Real Estate Institute of New Zealand, Inc. and a become Licensee. This is an alternative to taking classes.

  3. Step 3

    Start working for an accredited firm within three years of completing your Salesperson's Course. If you do not work for three years, you will have to take the course again. If you have a break in real estate employment for three years or more, you will have to retake the course to make your certificate current again.
