Kwikset is a North American lock company that is known for their popular Kwikset lockset. This lock is both affordable and easy to install, making is one of the most prevalent locks for homes in the U.S. If you lose your keys, or are worried about security, it is possible to change the cylinder in these locks without buying a new lockset. With a new cylinder, you'll have the security of all new keys without the expense of a locksmith or new lock.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Kwikset lockset
  • Screwdriver
  • Cylinder removal tool
  • New Kwikset cylinder
  1. Step 1

Remove the lockset from the door. If there are any round cover plates, or roses, around the knobs, twist these with your fingers and pry them off first. Use a screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the knobs together. These screws will be on the interior side of the door (inside the house). Next, grasp one knob in each hand and gently pry them apart until they are separated from the door.

  2. Step 2

Take the key out of the lock, if applicable. The cylinder is located in the half of the lock where you would put your key. This is the half that would be mounted on the outside of the home. This is the only part of the lock you will be working with for the rest of these steps.

  3. Step 3

Use a screwdriver or cylinder removal tool to turn the spindle at the center of the lock. Keep turning it until the tab at the base of the spindle is lined up with the two shorter spindles on either side. You can get a cylinder removal tool at a hardware store, or the tool may come with the new cylinder you purchase.

  4. Step 4

Slide your screwdriver or tool under the plate at the base of the spindle. Apply pressure on the plate until the spindle loosens and slides out of place.

  5. Step 5

Stick the forked end of the cylinder removal tool into the groove where the spindle was before you removed it. Push the tool in firmly until the cylinder is released. Once released, the cylinder will slide out of the housing automatically.

  6. Step 6

Take your cylinder to your local home improvement store and purchase another Kwikset cylinder that is the same size and handing. The staff in the lock and key department can help you find one that matches.

  7. Step 7

Remove the new cylinder from the package and align it with the opening on the lockset. If you purchased a cylinder that was correctly handed, the cylinder will only fit into the opening one way. Slide the cylinder into the opening. The Kwikset logo should be above the keyhole, not below. Press firmly on the cylinder until it clicks into place.

  8. Step 8

Reinstall your lockset. Slide the two halves of the lock together until they click into place. Reinstall the two screws on the interior of the door, then slide covers or roses back around the knob.
