Things You'll Need:
- Gas cooktop
- Flexible gas supply line
- Pipe sealant
- Screwdriver
- Paint brush
- Soapy water solution
-
Step 1
Measure the opening for the cooktop for the replacement unit. Contact a plumber or licensed contractor to add a gas line for the new cooktop.
-
Step 2
Remove the old cooktop. To do this, turn off power at the main circuit that supplies power to the stove. Open any cupboards or drawers to gain access to remove any screws and bolts. Unplug the old cooktop, and lift it out.
-
Step 3
Lay the stove top upside down so you can see the areas for the gas hookup. There should be a place to screw in a gas regulator. Spread some pipe sealant on the threads, and attach the regulator.
-
Step 4
Screw the flexible gas line into the other end of the regulator, applying more pipe sealant at the connection. Hook it up to the existing gas line, and tighten firmly. Plug in the electric power cord. Paint the connections with a soapy water solution to check for bubbles, signifying a leak. If all is well, turn off the gas lever.
-
Step 5
Turn the cooktop over and set it in place. You can now put the burner parts in place and snap on the control knobs. Place the grates over the burners. Turn the gas lever back on and check the burners for a steady blue flame. It may take a couple of seconds to purge the air out of the lines.
