The most common way to smoke tobacco through a pipe is through wood. Purchasing a wood pipe will cost you a pretty decent amount of money. Fortunately, you can carve your own using a piece of wood and a few carving tools.
Search your yard or nearby woods for a thick, durable piece of wood with no holes in it. Be sure that it is not rotting and that there are no bugs present. If you can find one that appears similar to a spoon pipe with no damage, that would be ideal.
2
Using a carving knife or small hand saw, cut your piece of wood down to about 5 to 6 inches.
3
Add a small amount of mild detergent to a cup of warm water. Use a scrub brush to scrub any dirt or moss off of your piece of wood. Rinse the wood.
4
Boil the wood in a pot of water for about 15 minutes in order to remove any more bacteria that may be on it.
5
Allow the piece of wood to dry.
6
Carve your wood into the desired spoon shape. In the spoon area, carve a small, thumb sized dip into the wood. This is where the tobacco will be placed.
7
Sand down your wood using your 120 grit sandpaper. Be sure that it is completely smooth and even with no rough or sharp edges. Sand down the dip as well.
8
Place a long, twist drill bit on your drill. Begin drilling through the end opposite of the "dip". Be sure you are drilling in a straight line all the way through until you get under the "dip".
9
Drill straight down through the "dip". Once you reach the hole that you drilled through the handle, stop drilling.
10
Boil your piece of wood again for 15 minutes and allow it to dry.
11
Carve any designs into your spoon pipe that you would like.
12
Sand down your pipe with 150 grit sandpaper to smooth it out.
13
Place a sheet of newspaper on a hard, flat, dry surface.
14
Mix a small amount of colored Kool-Aid with water. Use a paintbrush to stain your pipe and let it dry.
15
Use your tobacco pipe!
Tips & Warnings
Wear gloves to avoid getting splinters and injuring yourself with the knife.
Be very careful when using sharp objects.
Be sure that you do not drill too far down into the dip. The pipe will not work properly if this happens.
